All year groups use the National Curriculum document as a basis for English, following Lancashire Grid for Learning suggested genres to ensure full curriculum coverage see English year group overviews. Often texts used in English link with topics in the Challenge Curriculum see Challenge Curriculum English links.

Pupils in Reception and KS1 have daily phonics lessons where pupils follow Letters and Sounds phonics scheme and Fast Track phonics, supported by LCP planning. In KS2 pupils have daily SPAG lessons where spelling strategies, punctuation and grammar are taught.

SPAG based written homework is also set, which re-enforces learning covered in class. Spelling lists can be found on year group pages for class.

We have a wide range of books which are banded according to reading ability. Schemes included in book banding include: Project X, Oxford Reading Tree, Dandelion and Ginn. Our extensive library includes fiction and non-fiction, poetry and picture book sections. Each year group follows Lancashire Grid for learning maths objectives to ensure full curriculum coverage see Key Learning in Maths Yr1 — Yr6.

Pupils are taught maths daily and teachers plan in where links can be made with other curricular areas see Challenge Curriculum overview document Maths Links. Pupils are expected to know times tables up to 12 x12 by the end of Year 4.

They are taught mental maths strategies as part of their daily maths lessons. Maths homework is given weekly, which re-enforces topics covered in class.

Pupils are also encouraged to work on number bonds and times table skills at home. Years follow the Challenge Curriculum in the afternoons.

Planning

Topics are based around history, geography or science. Design technology, art, music, computing and dance are incorporated into each topic. All National Curriculum objectives are covered see Challenge Curriculum document for topic overviews for each year group. RE is as taught using the Salford Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education Curriculum through question based topics using RE Today resources.

PE is delivered weekly by class teachers and external providers. Pupils in lower Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to learn to swim.

Upper KS2 pupils are coached in football by Manchester United Foundation. Upper Key Stage 2 pupils also have the chance to experience outdoor and adventurous activities, through a residential.

Computing is taught both discreetly, including Espresso units on coding, and also integrated into Challenge Curriculum topics. Using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, as well as how to report concerns is central to our ICT teaching. In Year 3, all children learn a musical instrument. This is part funded by the Wider Opportunities fund, and part funded by school.
